Relationship Between Knowledge of Ergonomics and Workplace Conditions with Musculoskeletal Disorders among Nurses: A Questionnaire Survey

Today, the musculoskeletal disorders are one of the most frequent health problems related directly to working conditions and they occur in nurses who get little or no training in the safety and ergonomic principle of patients' care. This study is aimed to evaluate interaction between the nurses’ awareness of ergonomic principles and workplace conditions with work-related injuries in two Iranian hospitals.To perform this study, 335 nursing personnel who had full inclusion to participate, were selected from 13 different wards of two hospitals. A verified five-staged questionnaire was used for collecting data. Nurses' awareness of ergonomic science, working conditions (including lighting, ventilation and etc) and work-related injuries and problems received 2.93±0.58, 2.23±0.54 and 2.66±0.76 scores out of 5, respectively.According to our results,nurses' awareness of ergonomic principles was mediocre and,the level of their knowledge about working conditions and work-related injuries were scored low and weak, respectively.
